GI Joe art auction going very well. Larry Hama very kindly put up something on his Facebook page about it. Auction ends on Sunday so will be interesting to see how they go. Not just in terms of price but also how many people have been watching them.

The next batch will go up then. including this one :-)

Other news is that I have started sketching out the six TRANSFORMERS covers that I am doing for IDW. Scans soon :-)

Hi. Not been here for a while.
Just wanted to mention that I have put four of my old GI Joe covers up for auction on eBay. I always said that I would never sell any of the cover art that I did during my days at Marvel. Truth is that after 18 years I am not as precious as I was about it. It will be cathartic to move some of this stuff and the cash will come in handy. Have a look through the covers and make a bid if you feel inclined. If not then I would be interested to know whether they provoke any memories.

Not been on here for a while so thought I better say hi :-)
Just bumped into a video on the net of me gassing away. I thought I would post it here not because I am an egomaniac but more because I talk about a couple of things that actually sound reasonably interesting ;-)
I was interviewed at OMEGA SEKTOR during one of our Draw the World Together events. I was questioned about DtWT, how it started and what we do so anyone wanting the background on that, have a listen. I was also asked about how I got started in comics which is something that I often get so that may be of interest to some people as well. Its a bit long but there ya go, I do tend to go on a bit sometimes :-)

Bristol Comicexpo

No cards to post today.
The weekend saw the forst Draw the World Together sketching event without the sponsorship of games company NCsoft.
Artists, David Lloyd, Kat Nicholson, Jason Cardy, Neil Edwards, Andrew Wildman (me), Stephen Baskerville, Lee Bradley, Laura Howell, Andi Tong and Simon Wyatt sketched for the fans on Saturday and took donations. On the Saturday evening there was a small auction of donated items and art. We are still counting but proceeds are looking like being in excess of £600. Not bad for a small convention.

What was great fun for me was meeting up with old collaborator Stephen Baskerville. I havent seen Stephen for quite a few years. We worked on many comics for Marvel a number of years ago such as Transformers and GI Joe. During the sketching event I did pencil sketches and Stephen 'inked' them up with black marker pens. would be cool to get some of these images emailed back. If any turn up I will post them here.
Also met up with Simon Furman for a curry in the evening. Haven't seen him for a while either so lots to chat about.

After the March of Dimes sketchcards went up on eBay (see previous posts) I have had a couple of requests to do more. I did do a few sketchcards a while back just for the fun of it and it would seem like a good idea to keep doing them. No idea what people would like to see so I guess it will just be whatever occurs to me at the time. I guess its an opportunity to try out some random things that I have never had the opportunity to draw for publishers. I haven't worked for DC so a few DC characters might be interesting although I might try and work through every Marvel character I ever drew. Anyone know what they are? If anyone has any suggestion of what they think might be cool let me know. :-)

the DtWT event for BRISTOL COMICEXPO is now sorted. We have a venue in the form of the Summit Room at the Ramada Hotel. There will be artists sketching to raise money for EveryChild from 2pm-5pm. Those currently scheduled to appear include, among others Mike Collins, Neil Edwards, Kat Nicholson, Emma Vieceli and James Hodgkins.
There will also be sketching happening on behalf of DtWT at the Insomnia Comics stand in the Small Press section Where Simon Wyatt and others will be doing their stuff.
Its been a little while since we have done one of these and its the first one with us doing it without our long time sponsors NCsoft. That said, we do have the help of Stephen 'Rockjaw' Reid and Mat Keller (now ex NCsoft) who use to run the shows for us, so its pretty much business as usual.
Will post next week as to how it all went.

So other than my own charity project, Draw the World Together I do get asked to do stuff for other peoples charities. Steven Frank approached me last year for the sketch of Optimus Prime for the March of Dimes charity. This year they are doing the 5" square cards again but also doing smaller sketchcards. New projects always start with a rough idea, a theme, an intention, a message or all sorts of other ways of developing a story. With regard to characters it swims around in your head as a sort of unfocussed, half seen impression of what the character looks like. Eventually you put something down on paper. Anything, just to begin to have it become real. So. With that in mind here is one of those sketchbook scribbles that is just about beginning to create the character for a new Cobley/Wildman project.

Weird Wild Winner

The exhibition of FRONTIER art at the Jaffe&Neale Coffee Shop and Bookstore in Chipping Norton continues and Saturday was the open day. We had a competition for the local kids and a few entries. The rules were one sheet of A4, minimum of 3 panels, Must contain the words Weird Wild and West. Only one of them stuck to the brief so little George Harris of Holy Trinity School was the winner. :-)
Exhibition comes down April 24th and then... thats the end of that :-(
But new exciting projects coming up with. Hold on to your seats... ROBOTS in :-)

The DFC is dead... Long live the DFC!

Actually, no... The DFC isn't dead. David Fickling and his inspiring team brought into this world something new and exciting, something that is just too good to disappear back into the ether. So until it finds its place again, the creators who found a home under the covers of The DFC (both published and nearly published) have come together under the guise of the Super Comics Adventure Squad!
Despite the Economic Woe, it is still an exciting time for the medium of comics and this blog will act as a hub for some of the best in British graphic storytelling talent, a place where you can keep up with what they're doing, all in one place, and where they will post news, events, sketches and comics, with links back to their own websites where you can see and learn more.

There is already a small archive of posts to view, written over the past week as we got ready to go live, including, for instance, some of the concepts that nearly became DFC strips (and may yet find an outlet somewhere else).

There is even one in there from me and a certain Mr F ;-)

The weekend is now just a memory. The 2009 Marillion Convention at Port Zelande in Holland was absolutely amazing! Three days of awesome Marillion music. By far the best yet of their conventions. The purpose built venue housed the almost 4000 Marillion fans, 3 bars, an amazing stage and one of the best light shows I have seen in a good while. This one was recoded for a no doubt DVD release. They do that every convention but the anti was really upped this time with boom cameras and all sorts of funky stuff. Wouldn't be surprised if we see some of this on telly. A big well done to all the band and organisers for making 4000 people very very happy.

Marillion played 'Seasons End',the whole of the 20 year old album to am amazing crowd who would let them off stage. They then played a few tracks from the new album. I wonder how many of the crowd realise the meaning of the new stuff. All inspired by 'The Power of Now'by Eckhart Tolle. More tonight :-)

March of Dimes

Last year I was asked to do a sketch for 'March of Dimes'. It is a charity sketching event to raise money for the March of Dimes campaign that raises money to give babies a healthy start in life. All info can be found on their site. The sketching event was put together by Stephen Frank who has a personal interest in the project. Inevitably I was asked to do a picture of Optimus Prime. DFC, RIP?

Many of you will have heard the sad news that the amazing DFC is to be cancelled after issue 43 if a buyer can not be found.
It has come as a blow to all of us who have been working on this amazing publication. The DFC editorial team should be acknowledged for creating the most significant children's comics publication since who knows when. In spite of its relatively short run (although 43 issues of anything is amazing these days) it will be held up as an example of what is possible. Circumstances stacked up against it and cut it shorter than we would all have hoped for but it exists in the world and is a publication by which subsequent comics will be measured. Its existence and passing has created a space for amazing new possibilities. David Fickling, the publisher, stood up and demonstrated what can be achieved with this medium and I think that that is how it will be remembered. All those amazing characters are now 'real' in the world rather than just 'good ideas'. Thats the difference between those that wish for something and those that have the courage to see it through.
We owe him one ;-)
If you have never had the opportunity to see what it was all about I would thoroughly reccommend you hunt down some issues. Either on Amazon or by getting in touch directly with the DFC through the website.
I also pretty am sure that many of the characters developed for the publication will be seen again.

Its not normally me to do this kind of drawing but...
couldn't sleep last night. Woke up in the early hours and for some reason this image was in my head. At that point I committed to getting it down on paper and putting it here in the morning. Not sure if things in the morning are as good as they seem at 3am but there ya go.
So I sat there bleary eyed and read a bit more of Eckhart Tolle's The Power of Now. If you have never read it, do. It's well worth it. Very similar to all the Landmark work I have done over the years. All about 'transformation' (nothing to do with robots, before you ask). One of the reasons I am reading it at the moment is it was the inspiration for the latest Marillion album Happiness is The Road . I have been a Marillion fan for many years. Their music has helped me through some dark times and celebrated with me during some great times. Amazing how sometimes you latch on to something that you feel will always be there. If you are not familiar with their music, check them out.

Didn't help me sleep though :-|

Hiya. long time no post.

All the GI Joe art that was available over at WILDWORDS has now been sold. Should be updating more soon.

Work for the Ologyworld computer games continues a pace. All looking good and its great fun to be able to work as a concept artist. A nice break from comics :-0

FRONTIER is also shaping up well and due to appear in The DFC in January.

As for Draw the World Together. Big changes are happening in 2009. More of that as and when it happens.

A lot has happened over the last few weeks. Another gig with the band which went well, as always ;-)
Also this weekend was CAPTION, the annual Oxford comic convention. It was great to meet up with some of the other DFC creatives most of who I had never met before. I've been in this industry a long time but its only now that I am enjoying crossing over to the more book orientated end of the market. All sorts of exciting possibilites around that :-)
Concept work for Kuju is coming along well but STILL can't show anything. All top secret.
Over on WILDWORDS I have put up more GI Joe art and some Venom art for sale so take trip over if you want to own a bit of old Marvel art at a very reasonable price.

Andrew Wildman is a designer/illustrator of some 25 years industry experience. His work as an illustrator has been used in advertising and publishing but it is for his work in the field of comics that he is best known. Storyboarding for the film Wing Commander and design and concept work on games The Mummy, Gunlok, Jesse James: Gunfighter, Delta Force, Largo Winch and Dredd v Death have created a presence within the computer games industry.
More recently, Wildman returned to the comics world of Transformers with the Dreamwave and IDW published Graphic Novel The War Within – The Dark Ages, with long-time collaborator Simon Furman and Black Horizons with writer Tim Seeley published by Devil’s Due. Andrew was also Head Character Designer at BKN where he created characters for the animated TV show Legend of The Dragon along with Ali Baba, Kong: Return to the Jungle and Zorro: Generation Z.
Andrew is currently developing a Graphic Novel with Bulldog Empire creator/writer, Jason Cobley who he previously teamed up with on the comic strip FRONTIER for British comic The DFC. He is also Children’s TV series with Bob the Builder scriptwriter, Simon Jowett.

Other work includes character and environment design for the Games Development studio, NiKNaK.
In 2005 Andrew founded the charity project, Draw the World Together. The purpose of the project is to raise funds to enable education possibilities for street children around the world.

Last weekend was great. Draw the World Together appeared at the Omega Sektor in Birmingham. OS is a game players venue. Bit like a night club with 350 PCs in it with people playing LAN games. 24/7. The event was set up by NCsoft which is why DtWT were there. I was sketching game characters along with Neil Edwards, Andie Tong and David Nakayama who came over from America. A mix of styles which was cool. There will be a full report on the DtWT site as soon as. All in all with the sketching and an auction we did we raised an amazing £3000! How cool is that?!
Back at NiK NaK for a couple of days then Frontier for the weekend.

So if you didn't know I run a charity project called Draw the World Together. Everything you would ever need to know about that is HERE.
Anyway. We are currently producing a 'sketchbook' with computer games giants NCsoft. It will contain interpretations of some of their characters from the massively popular MMO game, City of Heroes.
Contributors are many and varied and all the news about that at the DtWT site.
But for now... Here's my offering.

Dragonology

Work on the Dragonology project at the NiK NaK studio hit a significant point today. The VSD (bit of jargon there) was completed. Basically its a fully playable level of the game that contains a version of al the game play elements of the game. It's great!! You fly a dragon around the coast and do cool stuff. Wish I could show you but it's still a bit secret.
The other project has had me draw trees and foliage... all week. Kinda great though. Not a robot to be seen. Strangely all looking a bit 'Piranesi'. Again. Wish I could show you but...
Other news is that we have a great project lined up for Draw the World Together. Cool thing is that among all the big name comic book artists involved I also managed to get Transformers artists, EJ Su who is sketching an NCSoft character for us. Now that I can show, when he sends it over. and if you are lucky enough to come along to the Bristol Comicexpo you may even get a print of it ;-)

For those who have just popped over from my Wordpress blog site... welcome :-)
This is now where it's at. This is the WILDWORDS portal for all things Wildman, Draw the World Together, WILDideas, Frontier, Magic Theatre (not much there at the moment but ya never know) and all the other stuff I love making up. Oh yes. Even some music for you in the form of Cooper Black (and we now have a CD!)
also here will be all the upcoming news about the new games project that I am working on at NiK NaK studios. As soon as they let me I will be posting some of the concept art that's being done.
More variety for you and far easier for me to post to.

So originally I had a blog on Blogger, then I migrated to Wordpress which is great, now it seems that Blogger is the way to go after all. Easier to post to and (now) more user firendly.
So what am I up to at the moment? working in the Oxfordshire studio (as opposed to Guildford). Drawing Wizards and stuff for the new game being developed by KUJU games studio, NiK NaK. Check out the www.niknakgames.com website occassionally for updates on the development of the game. It's gonna be great. As soon as I get clearance I will put some of the drawing up on this blog.
So what else? well. work has started on FRONTIER, the new western (with a difference) comic strip by myself and writer colleague Jason Cobley. It's great to finally have a project to do with Jason, we have had many possibilities come up over the last couple of years and finally one has the green light that we all wait for. A blog has been set up for that project (blog addict, me) and news of posts for that will appear... soon.
